Y. B. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Minister of Higher Education (MOHE) announced the Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning (Setara) on July 12, 2010 revealing the top 7 IPTA and 11 IPTS attained the ‘Excellent’ rating in  Malaysia. Universiti Kuala Lumpur was among the IPTS short listed in the rating along with Multimedia University (MMU), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Sunway University College, Curtin University of Technology (Sarawak campus), Monash University (Sunway campus), Taylor's University College, International Medical University (IMU), Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak campus), Nottingham University (Malaysian campus) and Management and Science University (MSU).

According to MOHE the Setara rating is a way for the ministry to assess and evaluate Higher Learning Institutions as an input to formulate appropriate higher education policies. This is a great accomplishment for UniKL as an IPTS with a strong focus in engineering technology and entrepreneurship.
