Putrajaya, 7 September 2011‐ UniKL Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI) team was announce as one of the top 5 finalists for Dare to Dream Challenge Contest under the category of products & packaging design in conjunction with International Greentech & Eco Product Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM 2011). UniKL MSI team was awarded cash prize RM1000.00 and certificate in an award presentation ceremony that was held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre by Y.B Puan Noriah Kasnon, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water.

The UniKL MSI team was represented by two students from Diploma Engineering Technology program who designed a product using biodegradable material. The product that called “Biodegradable Shoe” is design by combination of natural sources to overcome the problem of greenhouse effect, supervise by Senior Lecturer, Mr. Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman. The main material used is natural rubber, an elastomeric and thermoplastic. The used a technology to reduce the smell of the natural rubber and make the rubber freeze quickly. The latex is not mixed with chemicals but frozen with a combination of latex and rice straw to strengthen the structure, while the surface is made with cotton fabric, pineapple fiber and plant dyes that are flexible and comfortable.

Dean of UniKL MSI, Assoc.Prof. Dr.Rusli Othman said that this is the first time UniKL MSI join the competition organized by Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water. “We do a good job for this time and I believe that our students will perform better for next competition soon.” The design was publish at International Greentech & Eco Product Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM 2011).
