Exploring Opportunities in Digital Broadcasting

20 October 2011, Kuala Lumpur-- Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is keen to be the first university in the country to train and produce human capital especially graduates specialise in Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB).  Universiti Kuala Lumpur President and Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dato’. Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri said, this is in line with the university’s vision and mission in becoming the leading entrepreneurial and technical university in the country.

“We are always following our mission and vision. We are trying to be the real entrepreneurial and technical university and this can only be achieved if we work with the industries in terms of qualifying the human capital needed by the industries. That is why we are keen to work and collaborate with the industry partners. They have those innovations and they are well-versed in latest technology and technology transfer”, he said.



He said this at a press conference after the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd (PSSB) and Kordia LTD. New Zealand in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Also present were UniKL Deputy President (Academic & Technology), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Azemi Mohd Noor, PSSB Executive Director, Datuk Abdullah Kadir Bacha, New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia Mr. David Pine, and Kordia LTD. New Zealand General Manager, Mr. Alan Turner.

The MoU is expected to promote a common understanding and later a framework that involves the transfer of skills and knowledged from Kordia to UniKL through PSSB Digital Broadcasting activities. This skill and knowledge transfer from Kordia will be implemented through PSSB industry based training for UniKL on the planning, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance of the national digital terrestrial network.

Commenting on the MoU, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hakim said, it will be an enormous stepping stone in bringing the technology transfer activities into the university which will further strengthen its resume as a leading technical university in the country.



“This is actually what we aim for.  Of course we are very keen in terms of latest technologies. So, we are looking forward to have successful partnership with the right partners”, he said.

Meanwhile, Puncak Semangant Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Syed Azmin Syed Nor said, the MoU will be an evocative moves for the company to provide the Digital Terrestrial Television Hub (DTTH) in Malaysia.

When asked why the company chose UniKL as their partner, this what he had said “It is because of the base. The link of MARA. This is the beginning of the journey, the beginning of the institution (UniKL). MARA has a big base of students (including those in UniKL),” he said.

According to Wikipedia, Digital Terrestrial Television is the technological evolution and advance from analogue terrestrial television, which broadcasts land-based (terrestrial) signals.

"A terrestrial implementation of digital television technology uses aerial broadcasts to a conventional antenna (or aerial) instead of a satellite dish or cable connection," the online dictionary says.

Furthermore, Digital terrestrial television (DTT) also offers advanced spectrum efficiency compared to analogue TV. It also offers improved video and audio quality, interactivity, as well as swelled programme choices.
