The 2009 Design Innovation Exploration (DIX) organised by Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM) and Shell Malaysia was held on April 1 and 2, 2009. This year, UniKL was proud to co-host this prestige event that abridged creative minds and young pioneers together to showcase their remarkable technological invention. The two days event celebrated design and new invention which involved students from various primary and secondary schools, university students and professionals. There were exhibitions and various interactive activities conducted during the event.
MRM, together with Shell Malaysia believed that DIX 2009 will foster the knowledge of innovation development to produce creative designers and students who are able to contribute their ideas by presenting them in a functional system or product in efforts to raise efficiency in the fields of productivity and design in the country. It also provides a platform for designers and industries to cooperate in producing quality products, and promotes healthy competition through innovation, science and technology. With this aim, the cooperation with UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) was welcomed by UniKL as a way to introduce and promote IPROM to participating schools and industries. The exploration also exposed IPROM students on the current needs and demands of the industry for their pursuit.
 


 

National Malaysian twin registry (NMTR) is a not-for-profit organisation which facilitates scientific research involving participation of twins or their family members in order to answer some of the questions of health and wellbeing relevant to Malaysians. NMTR is officially launched in June 2008. The proposal is approved by Ministry of Health and National Medical Research Registry. University Kuala Lumpur has provided the Grant for this project.
 


 

Universiti Kuala Lumpur is honored to receive an accreditation certificate by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The certificate was presented to UniKL by Dr. Vahid Alli, Research Counselor and Director for Iranian Student Affairs, South Pasific Region on April 14, 2008.
 


 

Due to UniKL fully equipped facilities and well organise event, UniKL is given the honour to be the host for this international event - CIMB Group World Universities Peace Invitational Debate (WUPID) 2008 for the second time in arrows. With H&G Strategic Communication Sdn. Bhd. as the organiser, this annual programme is a platform for top universities parlimentary debaters to debate and voice out issues on peace as part of promoting global peace. There were more than 30 top universities in the world participate in this debate. Among the universities were Cambridge University, Oxford University, University of Sydney, National University of Singapore, Harvard University, University of Melbourne and many others.
 


 

Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT), in partnership with AERO-Bildungs GmbH of Germany, is approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) as a second site Aviation Maintenance Training Organization (MTO). UniKL MIAT will offer EASA Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License training program. Successful participants will receive the ‘Certificates of Recognition’ and will be considered as having passed the written examination for EASA License (Category B). This program conducted by instructors that have received training in Germany and certified as an instructor for the EASA program. The instructors are Licence Aircraft Maintenance Engineers with years of experience on operating aircraft. They also have more than 10 years of experience in aviation training. Universiti Kuala Lumpur marks another history on August 5, 2008 as it sealed an MoU with one of an internationally recognised institute in IT, Geneva Information Technology Institute (GITI), based in Switzerland. Recently awarded as Institusi Pendidikan MARA (IPMA) Terbaik 2008, MIIT has expanded its wings as the centre for both Malaysian and Swiss in pursuing their knowledge in IT. Programmes offered by MIIT include CCNA/P (networking), e-commerce council (e-commerce) and security. Thru this collaborative effort, MIIT promotes the concept of edu-tourism as the participants from Malaysia and Switzerland will have the opportunity to explore the culture of both countries during their academic years. This important partnership served as a gateway for MIIT to send their lecturers and students furthering their studies in Switzerland as well as to path a strategic linkage for ICT applications through UniKL’s technopreneur products at global arena since Geneva are the centre of many international organisations.
 


 

UniKL one step ahead compared to other higher learning institutions in Malaysia as it becomes The First Higher Learning Institutions in Malaysia Certified as NGV Installer by Road Transport Department. UniKL MFI that specialises in automotive technology not only provide service for CNG/NGV installation but also offer CNG/NGV training, professional courses and R&D activities related to CNG/NGV. Training and professional courses for CNG/NGV are organised by UniKL MFI with its industrial partner from Hijau MOG Sdn Bhd. Areas of interest for the research and development programmes are on the bi-fuel system (carburetor system), bi-fuel system (sequential system), diesel-dual system, dedicated mono-fuel system, CNG marine engine, LPG engine and CNG motorcycle. The R&D participate by local industrial partners of UniKL MFI, namely: Tactical Force Sdn Bhd, Hijau MOG Sdn Bhd, Motori NGV Industries, Citra Line Sdn Bhd and C.N.A. Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Malaysia Pahang. UniKL MFI also supported by its international industrial partners such as MUJIN Tech Co. Ltd. (Korea). The installation activities of CNG/NGV are jointly managed by D’Automotive Services and Motori NGV Industries through UniKL Resources Sdn Bhd (URSB), a wholly owned company of Universiti Teknikal MARA Sdn Bhd.
 


 

The Assistant Nurses Programme is an effort spearheaded by TASK FORCE 2010 (Malaysia), formed on January 8, 2007 and was entrusted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to assist in the effort to bring peace to southern Thailand. Together with its counterpart, TASK FORCE 960 (Thailand), youth from the districts of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, were selected for the programme where they will be taught nursing care in surgical, emergency treatment, obstetric, gynecology and community health care. As part of its initiatives to help southern Thailand, Universiti Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) has designed a certificate programme to train 40 young Thais to become Assistant Nurses in its campus. The youths will be undergoing the programme for one year and will be awarded a certificate upon completion of the programme that qualifies them as Assistant Nurses. The programme was officially launched by Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah in a simple but yet a memorable event on August 30, 2008 in Ipoh, Perak.
 


 

As part of its effort in enhancing its capabilities as a developer of key human resources in IT and Multimedia, Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (MIIT) has been aggressively establishing active collaboration with esteemed partners , the latest being Kolej Yayasan Sabah (KYS). The working relationship with KYS was sealed in an MOU signing ceremony graced by Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman, the Chief Minister of Sabah on June 14, 2008. The MOU aims to establish collaboration between the two partners in the fields of technical, education, animation and other related activities.
For the ceremony, MIIT was represented by Y.Bhg. Prof. Dato' Dr. Abdul Hakim bin Juri, President of UniKL while KYS was represented by Dr. Dayang Aminah Ali, CEO of KYS. Also present at the ceremony were Prof. Dr. Mohd Azemi Mohd Noor, Deputy President (Academic & Technology) and Dr. Roslan Bin Ismail, Dean of MIIT.
MIIT also participated in a dialogue session held shortly after the MoU signing along with other multimedia and animation companies and other organisations including MOSTI and MDEC. The dialogue session discussed several pertinent issues such as the revolution of new animation technology and film & animation project and factors influencing the career opportunities in the related field just to name a few.
 


 

Ir. Mohd Harridon Mohamed Suffian of UniKL MIAT made Universiti Kuala Lumpur proud when he was announced as the sole recipient of the Anugerah Khas Peringkat Kebangsaan in the Majlis Anugerah Kecemerlangan Institusi Pendidikan MARA 2007 on June 25, 2008. Ir. Harridon received the highest recognition for his achievement to be in the top 10 placing as an Astronaut Candidate of the National Space Programme. The award was presented by Y.B. Dato' Noh Haji Omar, Minister of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development (MeCD). The event, organised by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) is aimed to honour all staff, graduates and students from all education institutions under the MARA flagship (also known as IPMa) who have made headlines through their excellent academic achievements or who have won awards in various competitions, exhibitions or sports championship throughout the year 2007, both at the local and international arena.
 


 

Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) marked another milestone in its campus history when it is appointed as the Supervising Officer (S.O.) to monitor the construction of four deep sea vessels. The vessels, constructed by WMA Resources Sdn. Bhd., is part of the ship construction project for the poverty eradication programme, a collaborative effort between Ministry of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development (MeCD), Suruhanjaya Koperasi Malaysia (SKM) and Koperasi Pembangunan Rakyat Pahang Berhad. The official appointment document was presented to UniKL MIMET by SKM in a ceremony held in conjunction with a working visit made by Y. Bhg. Dato' Mohd Hashim Abdullah, Deputy Chief Secretary (Entrepreneur), Ministry of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development (MeCD) who represented Y.B. Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah, Deputy Minister on Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development to the vessel construction site in UniKL MIMET on June 12, 2008. This RM12 millions project will create a significant impact in the monthly earning of the fishermen, from RM 300.00 per month to RM 1,540.00 per month. The cottage industry among the fishermen community will also be increased from this project. Being the Supervising Officer, UniKL MIMET is responsible to monitor the physical construction progress expected to be completed within 8 months period, the technical specification and the financial expenditure comply with the approved specification. In conjunction with the visit, an exchange of MoU document between SKM and WMA Resources Sdn Bhd (WMA) as well as between UniKL Resources Sdn Bhd (URSB) and WMA were also held. Also present at the visit were Y. Bhg. Dato' Mangsor Saad, Chief Executive Officer of SKM, Y. Bhg. Dato' Zolkipli Abdul, Chairman of UniKL Council, Y. Bhg. Prof. Dato' Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri, President/ CEO of UniKL, Encik Wan Suffian Awang, Chairman of Koperasi Pembangunan Rakyat Pahang Berhad and Encik Wan Norazhar Wan Mustapha, Managing Director of WMA Resources Sdn. Bhd.
 


 

Universiti Kuala Lumpur City Campus hosted the Launching of 'Pembiayaan Pendidikan Insani', the latest product of Agro Bank on May 15, 2008. The product which is a study loan was launched by Puan Martini Osman, President of Agro Bank. 'With the product, Agro Bank hopes to further expand its service to provide financial assistance to the group of farmers and fishermen for them to send their children for higher education', said Puan Martini. UniKL was represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roslan Ismail, Dean, Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (MIIT). In his welcoming speech, Dr. Roslan said, 'UniKL is honoured to be given the opportunity to host the ceremony for Agro Bank as this will be a beginning for more collaborations involving both parties'. 'Pembiayaan Pendidikan Insani' is open to all Malaysians aged between 18-45 years old who wish to further their studies at the certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, degree or advanced degree levels with local and international tertiary institutions accredited by Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. The loan offered by Agro Bank is from a minimum amount of RM1, 000.00 up to RM100, 000.00 with repayment period up to 10 Duration of the repayment will only start 3 months after the course is completed.
 


 

Three delegates from Loughborough University, UK visited Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) on May 29, 2008. The delegates; Professor Rachel Thomson, Professor of Materials Engineering, Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering, and Director of the Research School of Materials: Professor Ray Jones, Professor of Organic & Biological Chemistry, Department of Chemistry: and Dr Iain Phillips, Head of the Department of Computer Science were all welcomed by Prof. Dr. Mohamad Azemi Mohd Noor, Deputy President (Academic & Technology) together with three other senior staff of UniKL. The visit focuses mainly on the opportunity given to UniKL staff to further their studies in Loughborough University as both university profiles are similar where most of the programmes offered are in the field of engineering and technology. Discussions were also made on research opportunities and other possible research links between two institutions. Loughborough University located at the central of UK has 24 departments and over 30 research centres and institutes within three faculties; the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. It is one of UK's leading universities with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research and strong links with industry and government. Part of the university achievement is to be in the top six universities in the UK (Times Good University Guide 2007), top three universities for teaching quality and 5 Queen's Awards for excellence in Higher Education.

With this accreditation, UniKL becomes one of the universities approved by the Islamic Republic of Iran for its student to pursue their studies in Engineering Technology programmes at the undergraduate level. This recognition shall pave the way for more collaboration between the university and the Islamic Republic of Iran in areas related to education, technology and industry.

The latest achievement following its recognition from Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) as the first approved Maintenance Training Organisation (MTO) in the country, UniKL MIAT had been selected to be the recipient of the prestigious Asia Pacific Aerospace & Defense Awards in Aviation Training: Aviation Workforce Development Organisation Category for the year 2008 by Frost and Sullivan. This award is presented to companies and organisations that have displayed superior accomplishments and exemplary achievements in areas such as market leadership, marketing strategy, business development strategy, market penetration, customer service, growth strategy and product line strategy, amongst others. Among the prominent recipients is Singapore Airline for the Airline of the Year Award, Singapore Technologies Engineering for the 'One Stop Shop' Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Services Provider of the Year Award and Airod Malaysia for the Customised MRO Centre of the Year Award. In its effort to develop human capital for the aviation industry, UniKL MIAT begins with generating interest on the industry at the secondary school level. It organises activities such as aviation camps, student's visits as well as participates in aircraft events organised by the industry. The environment for its graduates is especially designed for them to be ready to serve the industry. With world class infrastructure, highly trained and multi-skilled teaching personnel and a comprehensive training complying with technical standard and industry requirement, its graduates will be able to meet the demand of current and future aircraft maintenance industry. Currently, there are 1,300 students attending various programmes in its campus located in Dengkil. Its keen eye for training development was what impressed United States global consulting firm: Frost & Sullivan, which named UniKL MIAT as the Asia Pacific Aviation Workforce Development of the year. The award presentation was held on 14th March 2008 at the Grand Capthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore. Receiving the award for UniKL MIAT was Prof. Dato' Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri, President / Chief Executive Officer of Universiti Kuala Lumpur.
 


 

ICmic UniKL Academy announced the launching of two spin-off companies, ICreka Sdn Bhd and ICcipta Sdn Bhd on March 11, 2008. The event was officiated by Y. Bhg. Dato' Musa Muhamad, Secretary General, the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (MeCD) at Putrajaya. Also present at the ceremony were Y.Bhg. Datuk Nam Marthinin, Director General, MARA, Y.Bhg. Dato' Zolkipli Abdul, Chairman, ICmic UniKL Academy, Y.Bhg. Prof. Dato' Abdul Hakim Juri, President/CEO Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Encik Abdul Rashid Munir, CEO, ICmic UniKL Academy. This is a fruitful result to the establishment of the Academy by MARA, ICmic and Universiti Kuala Lumpur in early 2007 with the objective of focusing and promoting microelectronics competency development for Malaysians particularly in the area of Integrated-Circuit (IC) and Systems Application design couple with nurturing and guiding the apprentices to become technopreneurs. The academy targets to produce 450 technopreneurs within 5 years. ICreka Sdn Bhd and ICcipta Sdn Bhd are the subsidiary of the ICmic UniKL Academy and both are involved in IC design and product development. During the event, Appreciation Awards are given to Bahagian Pembangunan Usahawan MARA, Bahagian Penganjuran MARA and Telekom Malaysia Berhad for their strategic contributions and support towards the technopreneurship development of ICmic and the academy. On hand to receive the awards are Y.Bhg. Datuk Nam Marthinin and Tuan Haji Gazali Harun, the Chief Procurement Officer, TM.
 


 

Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) started the New Year with high flying recognition from Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia (DCA). It officially became the first approved Maintenance Training Organisation (MTO) following a certificate presentation ceremony held on January 24, 2008 at its campus in Dengkil. Y. B. Mulia Tengku Dato' Seri Azlan Ibni Sultan Abu Bakar, Deputy Minister of Transport II graced the ceremony together with other distinguished guests including Y. Bhg. Dato' Azharuddin Abdul Rahman (Director General, DCA), Y. Bhg. Dato' Zolkipli Abdul (Chairman of UniKL Council), Y. Bhg, Tuan Haji Mohamad Omar bin Ali (Chairman of UniKL MIAT Board of Directors) and Y. Bhg. Prof. Dato' Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri (President / CEO of UniKL). The first of its kind in Malaysia, UniKL MIAT is responsible in imparting ab-initio training to the students in the field of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. The approval is based on DCA Airworthiness Notice No. 85 - APPROVAL OF TRAINING ORGANISATION which has adopted the Civil Aviation Authority United Kingdom (CAA UK) British Civil Aviation Regulation (BCAR) Section L requirements such as the standards and syllabus. The objective of the training program is to prepare eligible candidates for License without Type Rating (LWTR) examination conducted by DCA. The training courses in the field of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering are designed to give the students the following essentials which are also in line with the requirements of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Training Manual. UniKL MIAT in its effort to obtain the approval has developed the MAINTENANCE TRAINING ORGANISATON EXPOSITION (MTOE) which is a mandatory requirement and must be approved by the DCA. It also underwent rigorous audit sessions conducted by a team of DCA experts. Following are the aspects which were scrutinised to ensure strict adherence for quality assurance purposes: Facilities and equipments Instructional staff, examiners and assessors Classrooms, workshops, hangars, demonstration area, administration office, library lesson plan, training notes, course delivery, skills development Examination Management Quality system and internal Audit Staff continuation training With the recognition as an approved MTO, the university will have the privileges to conduct basic and aircraft type training courses, issue certificates and the possibility to conduct examinations on behalf of the authority. Following the ceremony, an industry dialogue was held with renowned key players of the aviation industry such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia Sdn. Bhd., Eurocopter Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., Berjaya Air Sdn. Bhd. and Executive Jet Sdn. Bhd. The dialogue fulfilled its purpose as a platform for the members to exchange their knowledge and experience in the aviation field. Overall, this event is a successful one which serves as a morale booster for UniKL MIAT to kick start the new year.
