  • E-RESEARCH AT MALAYSIAN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
Shamsul Anuar Mokhtar, Rose Alinda Alias, Azizah Abdul Rahman
      Abstract
The paper describes the state of e-research at Malaysian higher education
institutions (HEIs). Three research questions are central to this study. What are the indicators for assessing e-research? What are the general characteristics of e-research at different levels of performance? What is the general performance of e-research at HEIs in Malaysia? In order to answer these questions, a nationwide survey was conducted involving 90 HEIs. 34 of the surveyed HEIs were actively involved in academic research, and they provided the data for this research. The questionnaire used in the survey was based on the e-research assessment framework proposed by this paper. The survey incorporated six e-research indicators. The findings of this study showed that a majority of HEIs in Malaysia were implementing some aspects of e-research.

  • ACADEMIC COMPUTING ASSESSMENT FRAMEWORK:AN ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURE USING MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS
Shamsul Anuar Mokhtar, Rose Alinda Alias, Azizah Abdul Rahman
      Abstract
The paper discusses the use of mixed-methods to develop the academic computing
assessment framework, with focus on the use of multivariate analysis to achieve a statistical balanced framework structure. Initially, the framework was developed using qualitative research on pilot higher education institutions in Malaysia. The framework encompasses six broad academic computing areas: 1) Teaching and Learning Using ICT; 2) Researching Using ICT; 3) ICT Vision, Plan, Policies and Standards; 4) ICT Infrastructure; 5) Information Services; and 6) Institutional ICT Support. The areas are further decomposed into components and indicators, with rubrics describing the different levels of implementation. To investigate the statistical structure of the framework, a survey was conducted involving seventy higher education institutions in Malaysia. Six separate applications of principal components analysis and reliability analysis are used on six data sets representing the six academic computing areas. With minor modifications to its structure, the academic computing assessment framework is found to be structurally reliable and still conforms to the theoretical concepts proposed by qualitative studies.

  • CRUSH SIMULATION OF C-GLASS/EPOXY (200 G/M2) UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE FUSELAGE SECTION
      N. Yidris, R. Zahari, A.S. Mokhtar, F. Mustapha, A.S.M. Rafie, M.T. Hameed Sultan, N.A.Kamal
      Abstract
The ABAQUS/Standard analysis code was used to simulate the quasi-static
crushing response of c-glass/epoxy unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fuselage section. In order to obtain the load-displacement response, the composite fuselage section with material density of 200 g/m2 was tested using universal testing machine. The main material properties of the c-glass/epoxy (200 g/m2) which were needed in the ABAQUS/Standard analyses were obtained from standard material characterization tests. Experimental results from the tests were used in the development of ABAQUS/Standard model. Three failure theories were programmed in the user subroutine code in order to predict the progressive damage of the composite materials. Satisfactory level of agreement between calculations and test results was obtained regarding the main crushing characteristics of the tested c-glass/epoxy fuselage sections such as peak compressive load, crush energy absorption and the overall crushing response of the fuselage sections as the finite element models were refined several times in
      order to achieve converged results.

  • MANUFACTURING AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION IN MALAYSIA: A PRELIMINARY REVIEW
Wan Mansor Wan Muhamad, Zaipul Anwar Zainu, Suhairi Hasan, Mohd Zulkhairi Mohd Zan
      Abstract
Growth of manufacturing sector globally is connected to automation technology
implementations. Previous studies performed on manufacturing automation technology
(MAT) implementations in Malaysia concluded that the intensity of implementation was low. However, moving towards 21st century, the MAT implementations in Malaysia are starting to show significant improvement. The extent of MAT implementation demonstrates clear transition from low level to medium and high level of automation. Few issues from previous literature review associated with level and pattern of automation implementation in Malaysia are described in this paper. In particular, the level and pattern of automation adoption is important to prepare Malaysia’s manufacturers for implementation of automation technologies.

  • BUILT-IN SELF TEST (BIST) PROBE FOR MEASURING JITTER
      Mohd Amir Abas
      Abstract
A high-resolution Jitter measurement probe for digital SoC applications is
presented, namely: Two-Delay Interpolation Method (TDIM) and Time Amplifier. The probe is completely new design for BIST Jitter measurement which offers two main advantages: a low range of timing measurement and a small size of layout. These two features are undoubtedly compatible with present high-speed SoC design architectures. Measuring technique for three common types of Jitter were also studied and explained with the aim to enhance the capabilities and compatibility of the scheme.

  • SPATIAL KINEMATIC ANALYSIS OF IG-BOT01 ROBOT AND ITS FORWARD SOLUTION
Badri Abu Bakar, Mohamad Shaiful Osman, Kushsairy Abdul Kadir, Mohd Ismifaizul Mohd Ismail
      Abstract
A robot called IG-Bot01 was constructed with 4-d.o.f and a gripper. The links
parameters are specified in matric unit. Based on Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) convention, link and joint parameter table is developed using right-hand mode. Basic formulation for D-H transformation matrix for adjacent coordinate frames is explained from which the
homogeneous transformation matrix for IG-Bot01 is derived. Therefore, the end-effector
position is determined using D-H parametric system. The solution presented in this paper is based on MATLAB programming environment.

  • A STUDY ON THE IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL EXPRESSION OF GALECTIN-3 IN THYROID LESIONS
Than Than Htwe, Gumballi K Swethadri, Jaqueline Wong Oy Leng, Ahmad Toha S, Jamil Dolkadir, Rajyaguru Kirankumar Maganlal, Muhammad Hamdi Mahmood, Mohd Syafiq Abdullah
      Abstract
It has been suggested that Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a potential tumor marker for
differentiating thyroid carcinoma from its benign counter part. The immunohistochemical
(IHC) expression of Gal-3 was studied on various thyroid lesions. A total of 95 cases were collected including 32 benign and 63 malignant thyroid lesions. These contained 37 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), 9 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma follicular variant (PTCFV), 16 cases of follicular carcinoma (FCA), 1 case of anaplastic carcinoma (ACA), 10 cases of follicular adenomas (FA), 4 cases of Hurthle cell adenoma (HA), 1 case of thyroiditis (TDT), 2 cases of toxic goiter (TG), 7 cases of nodular goiter (NG) and 8 cases of normal thyroid tissue taken for the purpose of looking at residual malignancy (NT) for comparison. Formalin-fixed paraffin embedded thyroid tissues were stained for IHC expression of Gal-3 using monoclonal anti-human Gal-3 antibody (R&D Systems Inc 1-800-343-7475). Gal-3 expression was measured semi-quantitatively on its distribution and staining intensity. Gal-3 expression was significantly strong in cancer cases compared to non-cancer cases (P=0.000) as well as in PTC to PTCFV (P=0.001), PTC and PTCFV to FCA (P=0.000), PTC to FCA (P=0.000). Gal-3 expression was sensitive but not to a significant level in differentiating PTCFV to FCA (P=0.066). It was neither sensitive nor specific in differentiating between FCA from FA and HA (P=0.339), and PTCFV from FA and HA (P=0.329). Our findings suggested that the IHC localization of Gal-3 may be a useful marker in adjunct to the routine histopathological staining in differentiating benign from malignant thyroid lesions. However, it is not a sensitive indicator for the differentiation of problematic cases like PTCFV from FCA, FCA from FA and PTCFV from FA.

  • AN INHIBITIONS OF INTERNATIONAL LAW OF THE SEA ON MALAYSIA’S MARITIME DEFENCE DOCTRINE
      Aminuddin Md Arof
      Abstract
This paper analyses the restrictions imposed on the Malaysia’s maritime defence
concepts and strategies by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982.
Among others, the paper examines the implementation of Sea Control in the maritime areas of national interest that include Malaysian Territorial Sea, the Sea Lines of Communication connecting Peninsular Malaysia with Sabah and Sarawak, the Exclusive Economic Zone as well as the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. It argues that the maritime areas of national interest do not have similar legal status. Hence, the military activities implemented in these waters need to be consistent with the principles and rights given by international law. The paper concludes that the limitation of military actions would directly inhibit Malaysia’s ability to effectively implement the Sea Control concept.

  • FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TOWARDS THE INVOLVEMENT IN ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITIES: A CASE STUDY ON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN MALAYSIA
Mohamed Hisham Yahya, Abdul Razak Abdul Hadi, Sulaiman Sajilan, Mohd Hisham Hashim
      Abstract
Entrepreneurship plays an important role in an economy. It creates jobs and
encourages competitiveness to spur an economy further. This study examines the factors that contribute towards the involvement in the field of entrepreneurship. The factors being studied are 1) exposure to entrepreneurial courses, 2) family background, and 3) gender. It is found that exposure to entrepreneurial courses have a statistical association to the propensity of being involved in entrepreneurial activities. However, family background and gender do not have a statistically significant relationship with the tendency of one to be interested or involved in the entrepreneurship field. This gives support to the efforts made by government to provide more programmes and trainings in entrepreneurship to increase entrepreneurial activities in the country.

  • INTERNAL CONFLICT – ISSUES AND MANAGEMENT
      Cordelia Mason
      Abstract
Internal conflict is pervasive and inevitable. It occurs everywhere especially within
organizations and has among others, business, economic, social and political implications. Conflicts have been defined, described and categorized in many ways. Some common categories of conflicts are ‘positive’, ‘negative’, ‘affective’, ‘cognitive’ and ‘value’. Causes of conflicts have also been extensively studied. Two major categories of causes are external causes and internal causes. This paper focuses on internal conflict. Specifically, this article seeks to explore common concepts of conflicts, the causes of conflicts, the outcomes of conflicts and the management of conflicts. Careful analyses of fifteen articles with different themes on conflicts yield some insights on issues prevalent in conflict management. Finally, the paper proposes an integrated model for conflict management. The model is constructed based on insights drawn from the analyses of the articles. The model may be used as a guide for resolving conflicts and may be a useful tool for consultants to use in handling tasks relating to conflict management.

  • IMPLEMENTATION OF QUARTER-SWEEP APPROACH TO ARITHMETIC AND GEOMETRIC MEANS FOR THE SOLUTION OF WATER QUALITY MODEL
      Hasan, M.K., Yaacob, Z., Sulaiman, J., Saudi, A., Othman, M., Abdullah, M. H.
      Abstract
Recent researches in water quality simulation via numerical approach were studied
using Half-Sweep Arithmetic Mean (HSAM) and Half-Sweep Geometric Mean (HSGM)
methods. In the study, the Half-Sweep Crank-Nicolson (HSCN) finite difference scheme was used as the basic discretization scheme. In this study, an extended research is conducted using an extended version of CN finite difference scheme, which is called the Quarter-Sweep Crank-Nicolson (QSCN) finite difference scheme. Implementing the Arithmetic Mean (AM) and Geometric Mean (GM) approach, we develop the Quarter-Sweep Arithmetic Mean (QSAM) and Quarter-Sweep Geometric Mean (QSGM) methods. Finally, results on numerical experiments conducted validate that the QSAM and QSGM method has been shown to be very fast as compared to their half-sweep and full-sweep methods.

  • COMPRESSION TIME SERIES DATA USING DAUBECHIES WAVELET
Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim, Mohd Tahir Ismail, Bakri Abdul Karim, Zaihar Yaacob
      Abstract
Wavelet is a very powerful technique because of its ability to describe signals both
in time and frequency domain (Mallat, 1998). Wavelets have emerged in the last twenty years as a synthesis of ideas from fields as different as electrical engineering, statistics, physics, computer science, economy, finance and mathematics. This paper considers the application of Daubechies wavelet (Daubechies, 1992) transformation on the Kuala Lumpur Composite
Index (KLCI), a financial time series data which contains unit root. The Daubechies wavelet transformation represents changes in the KLCI signals at various resolutions levels, hence we reconstruct the original time series data using these wavelets. For the purpose of this paper, we choose 4 filter coefficients namely D4 . We also discuss data compression which is very important in time series applications especially when we have a lot of data sets to be transmitted via online. Some numerical result will be presented by using Matlab.

  • OIL PRICE VOLATILITY AND THE PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC LISTED COMPANIES – EVIDENCE FROM BURSA MALAYSIA
Abdul Razak Abdul Hadi, Mohamed Hisham Yahya, Abu Hassan Shaari
      Abstract
The study is pursued with the objective to examine the effect of changes in oil
price on the share prices of public listed companies in Bursa Malaysia as proxied by Kuala Lumpur Compsite Index (KLCI). The study employs Engle-Granger Cointegration test and Error Correction Modeling (ECM). Using time series data from January 1986 through December 2006, this study finds that there is a significant long-term between the oil price and the KLCI. The two variables are also found to be positively correlated. However, the statistical results from the Granger Causality test show an absence of dynamic relationship between oil price and KLCI.
  • E-LEARNING AT MALAYSIAN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
Shamsul Anuar Mokhtar, Mohd Mansor Salleh
      Abstract
The paper describes the state of e-learning at Malaysian higher education
institutions (HEIs). Three research questions are central to this study. What are the indicators for assessing e-learning? What are the general characteristics of e-learning at different levels of performance? What is the general performance of e-learning at HEIs in Malaysia? In order to answer these questions, a nationwide survey was conducted involving 90 HEIs in Malaysia. The questionnaire used in the survey was based on the theoretical framework proposed by this paper. The survey incorporated ten e-learning indicators. The findings of this study showed that a majority of HEIs in Malaysia were implementing some aspects of academic computing. However there are significant differences between e-learning performances between universities and colleges. Abstract
The content of this review consist of the types, the parameters influencing the
performance (electrical and thermal) and also covers the numerical, analytical and
experimental models of PVT collectors. The parameters affecting the PVT performance such as the glazing, mass flow rate, and influence of absorber and design types were discussed in details. From the exergy analysis, it was found that the unglazed collector gives better total energy (electrical + thermal) results, whereas; the energy analysis favors the glazed collectors. Furthermore, the previous research works on building integrated photovoltaic thermal (BIPVT) were discussed. From the literature review, it is obvious that the PVT systems are very useful in the future. There are no substantial initiatives have been taken in order to reduce the cost and making PVT collectors favorable. Increasing the competitiveness of PVT collectors will enhance the utilization of renewable energy devices. This communication was done to ease future studies to be conducted by researchers.

       Abstract
Characteristics for motion vector distribution and block matching motion
estimation in video coding are found to be important factors to reduce computation
complexity and distortion performance. Center-biased characteristic is one of the important factors in motion vector distribution. The New Center-Biased Hexagon Search Algorithm for Motion Estimation (NHS) algorithm is proposed based on center-biased characteristic and two different sizes on hexagon shape. The search pattern with large hexagon shape is designed to locate the small region of the motion vector. Inner shrunk hexagon shape is used to estimate the best motion vector in the small region. The compact design is to provide accuracy to obtain the block distortion for slow motion and fast motion distribution. Implementation of NHS algorithm contributes to reduce the elapsed processing time and computational complexity. In addition, NHS algorithm highly maintains the properties of images and similar performance is obtained to the superior algorithms.

  • A COMPARISON STUDY OF COIR FIBRE AND OPEFB FIBRE-REINFORCED LATERITE BRICKS
      Sallehan Ismail, Zaiton Yaacob
      Abstract
The development of a new, low cost building material comprised of non-fired,
pressed laterite bricks incorporated with coir and oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) is
investigated in this study. This study attempts to identify the best reinforcing fibre for coir, OPEFB, and laterite composite bricks with the goal of improving their performance in term of density and compressive strength. This study compares the physical and mechanical properties of coir and OPEFB fibre-reinforced laterite bricks. The dimension, density, water absorption, and compressive strength of both coir and OPEFB fibre-reinforced of bricks are determined. The samples were prepared at the Majpadu Bricks Factory and tested at the Material Testing Laboratory, Universiti Teknologi, MARA (UiTM). This study has established that bricks reinforced with OPEFB fibres have a more consistent physical dimension, lower density, higher compressive strength, and lower water absorption, compared to bricks reinforced with coir fibres. Bricks reinforced with 3% by weight OPEFB fibres had a maximum compressive strength.
  • FONT DESIGNING USING CUBIC BÉZIER-BALL CURVES
      Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim
      Abstract
The Bézier methods are basically and widely used in Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) or CAD/CAM systems for free-form curves and surfaces modeling, such as
vector-based drawing (Adobe Illustrator, Freehand , CorelDraw, etc.) as well as font design in PostScript, Microsoft Word etc. Farin (1996). Said (1990) has constructs new basis functions which are derived from basis functions of Bézier and Ball. This new basis function known as Cubic Bézier-Ball with shape parameters. Furthermore this method reduces to Bézier and Ball respectively by choosing suitable parameters. In this paper, we will be study the prospect of using cubic Bézier-Ball curves in designing fonts which satisfy the geometric condition G0 and G1 at their joint. We hope that this scheme could provide a greater flexibility to the font designer.
  • EVALUATION ON THE IMMUNOMARKER PROFILE OF THYROID MALIGNANCY
Than Than Htwe, Norain Karim, Shayesteh Jahanfar, Mazidah Ahmad Mansur
      Abstract
Thyroid cancer is a common endocrine malignancy with an apparent increasing incidence. Appropriate clinical management and prognosis depend much on the diagnostic reliability of histopathological examination on the surgically removed thyroid tissue. However, problems on observer variations still lead to a low diagnostic reproducibility.
It has been suggested that Galectin-3 and Galectin-7 are potential tumor markers in
differentiating thyroid carcinoma from its benign counter part. Little has been known about the value of P16INK4A in thyroid malignancy, suggesting it in having a significant role in the formation of benign neoplasm and their malignant counterpart derived from follicular thyroid cells. A recent research work has mentioned that p16 gene alterations are common and correlate with histological features and biological aggressiveness in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), suggesting that it might have an important role in the pathogenesis. This study has been done to explore and evaluate the useful value of these three markers when applied simultaneously based on immunohistochemistry (IHC). A total of 110 cases were studied including 80 (72.2%) cancerous and 30 (27.3%) non-cancerous lesions. The cancerous lesions were 61 (55.5%) papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), 14 (12.7%) follicular thyroid cancer (FTC) and 5 (4.5%) other forms of cancer. Galectin-3 was found to be a potentially good tumor marker in assisting the diagnosis of thyroid cancer, with 97.5% sensitivity, 76.7% specificity, and 91.8% positive predictive value. However, the value of P16INK4A is inconclusive and Galectin-7 has no value in the diagnosis of thyroid
      malignancy.
