Postgraduate students are managed by the Institute of Research and Postgraduate Studies (IRPS) with regards to registration, student records, examination, fees and etc. Students undertaking Master’s / PhD (by research) are required to register and complete two university compulsory modules: Research Methodology and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Concurrently the students are also to work closely with their respective supervisors to come out with a relevant research topic. Within 6 months the proposal will be examined by an appointed examination panel to validate the contents meeting the standards of pursued level of study. The additional purpose of the examination is to ensure the research topics are in line with the university’s research focus area and contain potential commercial outcomes.
Throughout the study the project is closely supervised and monitored by the research supervisory committee to check the progress, milestone and financial aspect. The supervisor will liaise with the Technopreneurs Development and Innovation Division (TDID) to communicate with potential industries who can undertake the project for further development. If the negotiation between the students and the industries is materialized, the student will be absorbed to work under the incubator scheme with the mission to train them to be a successful technopreneurs graduate, and continue developing the potential product for commercialisation.
Research initiation can be based on a group or individual effort led by a Project Leader. Project Leaders play a very active role in facilitating research projects i.e. searching for research funds, setting up team members, placing intellectual rights, consultation and commercialisation. The Centre for Research and Postgraduate Studies and Technopreneur Development and Innovation Division (TDID) are responsible to support Project Leaders in carrying out research works effectively. In summary, to ensure the realization of this idea, project leaders are strongly encouraged to adopt the Research Model as depicted in the following diagram.

Clustering is a grouping strategy to facilitate research works in a more effective way. A group of researchers with various backgrounds are teamed up to look after one specific research area. So far Universiti Kuala Lumpur is focusing on 8 research clusters such as:
- Transportation & Logistics
- Advanced Materials
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Medical Science & Technology
- Information Technology, Computing and Networking
- Bio-Technology
- Microelectronics
- Language and Management
Linkages between University and industries are substantially important for the collaboration and commercialization of research and its products. The University requires support from the industry in the form of funds and technology while industries reap new innovations created by the University. The common interest between the University and industries is commercialization of new and useful technologies. The University is aware of the stiff competition among institutions of higher learning (IHLs) in getting industrial support and taking up the research products. Below is the list of R&D Central Committee Members for the year of 2008.
