Communication Technology Section in Unikl BMI started offering diploma programme in Telecommunication Engineering since 2003 and commenced its degree programmes Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) in Data Communications and BET in Mobile Communications in July 2007.
Both BET programmes are undergraduate programme designed to prepare students for professional careers in various Telecommunications fields. Data Communications is a discipline encompassing cabling, transmission, switching, signaling, networking and security in telecommunication engineering technology. Mobile communications is a discipline encompassing RF communications, antenna, microwave, mobile and satellite in Telecommunication engineering technology.
Students undertaking Data Communications study engineering mathematics and foundation in electronics and electrical principles courses such as Digital Electronics, Electronics, Circuit theory, and engineering mechanics in the beginning of two semesters of Year 1. In semester 3 of year 2, students study courses in Network Analysis, Transmission Systems, Electromagnetic Wave and Network Technology. They also study entrepreneurships, professional and communicative English which train them with necessary managerial, entrepreneurial and interpersonal communication skills. In later semesters of Year 3 and 4, the students embark on core discipline courses in the area of data communications such as computer networks, Internet protocols (IP), IP telephony, wireless technology, wireless network architecture, wide area networks, voice and data cabling, network management and network security.
Students pursuing Mobile Communications undertake engineering mathematics and foundation in electronics and electrical principles courses just like students who are embarking on Data Communications studies. Courses offered in the beginning of two semesters of Year 1 and semester 1 of year 2 is common for the two BET programmes. In semester 3 of year 2, students study courses in Network Analysis, Transmission Systems, Electromagnetic Wave and Continuous-Time Signals and Systems. In later semesters of Year 3 and 4 however, students of Mobile Communications would undertake a distinctive path and study core courses in Communication Technology, Discrete-Time signals and Systems, Microwave Communications, Probability and Stochastic Process, Digital Signal Processing, Antenna, Mobile and Satellite Communications.
Students also undergo industrial training towards the end of their academic studies. During the internship they are exposed to working environments, thus gaining valuable experience that will prepare them for employment upon graduation.
Students graduated from our BET in Data Communications degree programme and BET in mobile communications have worked in Government Link companies (GLC) such Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Petronas exploration and production, Menara TM and in private telecommunication companies such as Maxis Mobile, Celcom Axiata Berhad, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Time Telecommunications as Communications Engineer. They have also found employment in multinational companies such as Cisco, Alcatel, Ericssons, Zte Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Huawei technologies, Rohde and Schwartz, Schlumberger, NTT Communications, Juniper, IBM among others.
Our students are working as transmission engineer, technical support engineer, project engineer, network analyst, system engineer, system support engineer, network engineer, offshore telco and network engineer, test engineer, assistant manager, radio frequency engineer, product development engineer, wireless product engineer, technologist, IT help desk executive, software specialist, VSAT engineer and enterprise business process and communication executive, among others
Collaboration with industries
Cisco Malaysia and Communication Technology has run Cisco networking Academy program since its inception in 2004. This program is suitable for students who are interested in preparing themselves for Cisco Certified Network Associate. The aims of this program are to provide students with an awareness of the breadth of the cisco network profession and develop skills to successfully configure and deploy the techniques, devices, security appliances and technologies used to establish communications and thus the Internet. In addition, the program further aims to produce quality engineers with ethical responsibilities and able to develop their understanding and personal development beyond graduation.
Cisco has been providing the e-learn and on-line test materials encompassing topics such as Ethernet, LAN, subnetting, VLANs, routing protocols, frame relay, network security, Access Control Lists (ACL), dynamic addressing, wireless and network troubleshooting. By learning the concepts, theories and principles explored in formal lectures, practiced in tutorials and demonstrated in laboratory classes, students are able to pursue on their own initiatives, the cognitive, psychomotor and personal skills in problem solving and design exercises, undertaken by working in small groups supported by members of academic staff.

R&D activities in the Communication Technology Section are divided into three clusters:-
1) VoIP, Wireless and Cisco
2) Antenna and Radar, Communication System and Signal processing
3) Optical Communication and Mathematics
Member of the academic staff have been presenting their research work in conferences in Malaysia as well as overseas.
