“Aedes Mosquitoes Lifecycle Colouring AR Application” bags APICTA Award

A team led by Ts. Dr. Bazilah A.Talip from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL MIIT) has been announced as the winner under the Education category in The Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA Awards) 2020-21.

The announcement was held virtually on 15 December 2021.

Through the project entitled “Aedes Mosquitoes Lifecycle Colouring Augmented Reality (AR) Application”, the team beat five other teams from Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and Indonesia.

The team is led by Ts. Dr. Bazilah, and five other members who are Dr. Nurul Lina Mohd Nor, Dr. Zahidah Abd Kadir, Mohd Amin Che Mohd Shabri and Nurul Shuhadah Rosni.

According to Ts. Dr. Bazilah, the project took a year to complete and is ready for commercialisation.

“The book has International Standard Book Number (ISBN), and the mobile application is available on Google Play Store. Next, we would like to sell the book and use the product for University Community Service Responsibility to study the experience of usage and application for dengue awareness.

“We are in the process of publishing an electronic version of the book to reach a bigger audience due to the pandemic. We are also planning to develop the application for iOS users,” said her.

The project develops an effective augmented reality application for knowledge transfer from the perspective of practice-based design. Hence it defines a proper experimental set-up for the design issues and testing to enhance students’ conceptual understanding by immersing them in an augmented environment.

The mobile AR features coloring sheets that are able to attract, engage and motivate the users to use the application, thus become as an educational tool in assisting students’ conceptual understanding of mosquito breeding.

Therefore, this project will be a step forward to an exploration of the AR benefit in the experienced-learning approach application.

Notably, the APICTA 2020-21, hosted by Malaysia is a jointly organised programme by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and The National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM).

With the theme of “Stimulating Creativity, Innovation and Excellence in ICT”, all nominees from Malaysia were trained through the MDeC-Cradle Collaboration, Coach and Grow Programme (CGP).
