‘1337 hackers’ of UniKL MIIT captured the flag!

Many forms of cybersecurity-themed challenges were set up and it took a mental struggle to solve them. Cybersecurity tools and techniques were used to spot system vulnerabilities and unlock complex tasks.

That was how a team from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL MIIT) leveraged their essential and foundation hacking skills to ‘capture the flag’.

Yesterday, Mohammad Ezaly Iman Ramli (21); Muhammad Anas Khairuzzaman (21); and Amelia Abdullah (22) were announced as the third-place winner at the Battle of Hackers (BOH) 2022 – Capture The Flag Competition (CTF).

The fifth-semester student, Mohammad Ezaly Iman considered this to be the biggest win that he bagged during his active involvement in numerous hacking competitions.

“The CTF competition takes many forms of categories to test the participants and the common is Jeopardy, which comes with strings of challenges that need to be solved to earn points.

“We were assessed based on the challenges, and eventually won the third place,” he shared, who is also the Vice President for Computer System Security Club (CSSC) at UniKL MIIT.

The team took home certificates and a winning purse of RM600.

Three other cybersecurity teams representing UniKL MIIT shared the joy, finishing in 5th, 15th and 20th place out of 49 participating teams at the competition. The competition was organised by the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU).

APU BOH is an annual CTF cybersecurity competition open to all students from Malaysian universities and higher institutions.

In addition to providing a stage for talented youth, it provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, particularly in cybersecurity and digital forensics.
