UniKL BMI emerges as winner at 10th MiU 2021

Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) emerged as the overall winner at the 10th edition of the final year project (FYP) competition, Made In UniKL (MiU) 2021.

The recipients, Nur Shayilana Ilias and Dr. Mohd Azraie Mohd Azmi won the award through their project on ‘Development of Mobile Applications for Monitoring and Managing Hajj and Umrah Pilgrimage’.

The competition also witnessed a runner-up award presented to UniKL Malaysian Institute of Chemical & Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET) for their FYP of ‘Superbead Technology for Water Treatment, followed by another UniKL MICET team (third), UniKL Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology (fourth) and UniKL Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (fifth). 

President and Chief Executive Officer of UniKL, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Roziah Omar in her officiating speech during the closing ceremony said that this year is special because the 10th MiU 2021 was held concurrent with the internationally-renowned AIINEX Asia International Innovation Exhibition (AIINEx) 2021 competition.

“The event will also mark a new chapter between all the collaborating organisers and to us, it is a significant milestone in our effort to establish the networking to exhibit and recognise the innovative ideas. 

“Recognising this, UniKL will continue to organise more innovation competitions in the future and at the same time, we hope that this competition will inspire more innovators to participate in sharing their ideas and thoughts,” said YBhg. Datuk Dr. Roziah during the virtual closing ceremony of 10th MiU 2021 and AIINEx 2021 competitions which was held on 13 November 2021. 

For the record, MiU is an annual competition and a platform for FYP students of UniKL to exhibit their recent innovations and findings, which was organised by the UniKL Centre for Research & Innovation (CORI) in 2011. 

This year, it is jointly organised by UniKL MITEC and CORI, and this is the first time for MiU to collaborate with an external organiser, Connecting Asia as well as the co-organisers namely Readers Insight, Association of Professional Researchers & Academicians (APRA) United Kingdom (UK), Malaysian Technical Doctorate Association (MTDA), in conjunction with AIINEx 2021. 

According to the 10th MiU 2021 Event Manager, Ts. Dr. Mohd Amran Mohd Daril, the competition attracted 58 FYP among 11 institutes of UniKL and six projects from Research and Innovation of Private Higher Education Network (RIPHEN) represented by Management and Science University (MSU). 

All of the FYP were eventually participated in AIINEx 2021 to compete with a total of 224 projects which also involved eight countries namely Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nigeria, Bahrain, United States of America (USA) and Australia. 

In the AIINEx 2021 competition, the participating UniKL institutes managed to bring back three grand awards including UniKL MITEC through two projects entitled Online Learning System With Authentication & Identification Mechanism Using Neuro-Fuzzy Algorithm V2 and Ezent.

Also bagged the same award was UniKL BMI through Development of Mobile Applications for Monitoring and Managing Hajj and Umrah Pilgrimage project.
