UniKL Clinch 11 Medals in ITEX 2020
Universiti Kuala Lumpur clinched 11 medals at the 31st International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition 2020 (ITEX 2020).
UniKL won five gold medals, five silvers and one bronze through 11 participating Research Groups in ITEX 2020 which was held virtually online (Project Presentation & Assessment) for the first time due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
The gold medals were won by UniKL Malaysian Institute of Chemical & Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET) Research and Innovation team led by Dr. Tong Woei Yenn (project leader), Dr. Leong Chean Ring, Dr. Syarifah Ab Rashid and Ahmad Fahmi Mohamad through their project called ‘TheraHeal: All Natural Antiseptic Spray for Chronic Diabetic Wound’.
UniKL MICET team also received a special award from Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA) for their innovative product.
Other campuses on the gold-medal winning list are UniKL Malaysia Italy Design Institute (UniKL MIDI) team of Dr Ts. Shahneel Saharudin and TS Muhammad Naquib Ahmad Nazri (Project: Environmental Stress Cracking (ESC) Tester Using Fracture Mechanics Approach); UniKL Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL MIIT) team comprising Dr. Aznida Abu Bakar Sajak, Dr. Jasrina Jaafar and Dr. Shahrinaz Ismail (Project: LoRaWAN-Based Movement Tracker for Smart Agriculture).
UniKL Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology (UniKL MITEC) team headed by UniKL Deputy President Prof. Dato’ Dr Khairanum Subari, IR. TS. Dr Mohamad Ikbar Abdul Wahab, TS. Dr. Mohd Amran Mohd Daril, TS. Dr Fairul Anwar Abu Bakar and Rahmat Roslan Buang won gold medal through their innovative project called Improvement Initiative Electronics Decision System (IMeDS).
UniKL British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) team of Dr. Gan Hong Seng, Nawaf Waqas and Prashant Shukla Kumar won the fifth gold medal (Project: Osteoclicks – Medical Image Analysis Software for Knee Osteoarthritis Investigation).
Dr. Tong said TheraHeal is a natural-based remedy for chronic wounds, with phomopsidione (patent reference number: PI2020000720) as a hallmark ingredient.
The novelty of phomopsidione has qualified Dr Tong and his team obtained a number of grants, including the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Prototype Research Grant Scheme (PRGS) and a grant from Collaborative Research International Centre of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Trieste, Italy. Thus far, the phomopsidione-related projects are successfully published at Q1 and Q2 Scopus- and WOS-indexed publishers.
Patients with diabetic wounds, especially foot ulcers, signified a 150-fold high chance of amputation. It has been reported that 24% of diabetic patients undergo amputation within the first year after being affected with foot ulcers. Most of the available wound products in the market allow heavy metal toxicity, allergic responses and skin discoloration, especially the silver-based products.
“Thus, we created an efficient and safe spray product to treat the wounds. TheraHeal is toxic-free and it causes no burning sensation when apply to the wound. Based on our pre-clinical studies, it kills 99.9% of wound bacteria. It also heals wound 3 times faster than regular dressing by regenerating new cells and reducing inflammation,” said Dr Tong.
TheraHeal is tested according to the European Union (EU) standard and manufactured by certified Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) factory (Furley Bioextracts Sdn Bhd).
“We have targeted global healthcare providers and patients with diabetic wounds since about 285 million adults are diagnosed with diabetes,” he added.
The retail selling price for TheraHeal is 35% cheaper than other commercialized wound-spray products available in the market and UniKL MICET are optimistic TheraHeal will ultimately benefit patients with chronic wounds.
The 31st International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition 2020 (ITEX 2020) was organised by Concept, Innovative & Strategy (C.I.S) Network Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Malaysian Invention & Design Society (MINDS) and held from Nov 12 to 21 with judging and evaluations made based on video presentation submitted by contestants.
