UniKL debate team shone at Debat DiRaja IPT 2021

Four students have led Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) to finish in the Debat DiRaja IPT 2021 (Malay category) top-four by overthrowing a debate team from Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia (IPGM) in the quarter-finals.

The students are Syarifah Nurjiha (UniKL MESTECH), Muhammad Uwais (UniKL RCMP) Khairul Hilmi (UniKL RCMP), and Nur Anis Amira (UniKL RCMP).

In spite of that, the team has been overpowered by the defending champion, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in the semi-finals, which led the latter to advance to the final round.

Deputy Director of UniKL Student Development Center, Mohamed Zul Fadhli Khairuddin praised for the dignity and graciousness the UniKL team has shown in defeat considering that was their first participation in the competition.

“This team of four debaters was selected through a debate talent pool programme called Program Protege UMIND 2021 and this is the first time we have featured them at the competition.

“They had been trained in an intensive training for seven days ahead of the competition, which also involved the best debaters among the UniKL alumni,” told him.

Earlier on, the preliminary round was held online from 10 to 12 December, gathering 24 higher learning institutions (IPT) and only the top eight teams had been selected to advance to the next rounds.

For the record, Debat DiRaja IPT 2019 saw the UniKL debate team step forward to the final round and emerge as runner-up.
