Kuala Lumpur (23 March 2021): Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) once again proved they are indomitable in the TNBMHL 2021 Premier League as the varsity side dismantled TNB Thunderbolts to register a 4-0 victory at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

The win confirms UniKL’s status as the powerhouse in the league at the moment and continued to climb to the top of the table standings with 16 points – one ahead of Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) who crushed Nurinsafi Hockey Team 6-1 in an earlier match.

UniKL’s hopes of winning the Premier League title for the third consecutive year since 2019 will now rest on their last match in the fixtures against Maybank on Thursday. A win over the tigers is all the varsity side need to emerge champions.

UniKL Hockey President and team manager Dato’ Amir Azhar Ibrahim said he was delighted to the see the team getting their act flowing smoothly and played well to earn three points.

“We played much better today than against UITM. The team showed great composure, played to their actual strength and build the momentum going into our final match against Maybank on Thursday,” he said.

“Credit also goes to TNB Thunderbolts goalkeeper (Muhammad Hamiz) for a great performance. He saved many shots and denied us from winning by a bigger margin. Our focus now is on Maybank and we must carry on this motivation and momentum,” added Dato’ Amir.

UniKL seized the momentum from the beginning and earned their first penalty corner in the fourth minute. But Muhammad Razie Abdul Rahim’s drive from the top was saved by TNB Thunderbolts custodian Muhammad Hamiz Mohd Ahir who was in sparkling form and made several more saves.

The 2020 treble winners were not spared by the young Thunderbolts either and had to endure a barrage of attacks towards the end of the quarter.

However, it did not take long for UniKL forwards to find the Achilles heel in TNB Thunderbolts defence, breaking them down with a 24th minute field goal to jump out to an early lead.

It came from the efforts of Izwan Firdaus Ahmad Tajuddin who relayed the ball to Harvinder Singh, lurking dangerously in front of the goalmouth. The former international calmly tapped the ball past Muhammad Hamiz and into the net.

And instead of sitting back and being contented with the early goal, UniKL mounted a flurry of attacks and extended the lead in the 32nd minute through Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Jalil after receiving a long pass from youngster Nur Rahul Hrsikesa Thaitchana Muruti’s solo effort from the 25-yard line.

They went 3-0 ahead a minute later, this time team captain Mohd Marhan Mohd Jalil thumped in a cross from Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin from the right goal line.

The TNB Thunderbolts defence was in disarray once again in the 39th minute. Nur Rahul, who proved to be a vital cog in UniKL, scored the fourth goal from a beautiful strike that left Muhammad Hamiz off guard.

In an earlier match, Faizal Saari scored a hat-trick (1st, 28th and 45th minutes) as THT scored a thumping 6-1 win over Nurinsafi HT. THT’s other goals came through Mohd Fitri Saari (24th), Syarman Mat Tee (32nd) and Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli (49th minutes).

Aiman Haqim Badrulhisham scored the consolation goal for Nurinsafi in the 37th minute.
