Overview

Design is the creation of a plan for the construction of an object or system, and it portrays different meanings in different fields. The word design is referring to the field of industrial design where physical products are created through a series of design process and principles. Industrial designers not only focus on the appearance of a product, but also on how it functions, how it is manufactured and ultimately the value and experience it provides to users.

Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Industrial Design is a three (3) years programme developed for students who are passionate in arts and design. This programme allows student to choose elective courses from three different specialization, namely furniture design, product design and transport design, that makes this program different from the current programs in the market. Throughout three years students will be encouraged to explore design and development process in relation to scales of manufacture with a focus on usability, ergonomics, aesthetics, materials, manufacturing, and production. This programme is offered to fulfil both the present and future industry needs where the graduates will be able to:

Incorporating technical skills from integration of ergonomic, aesthetics, technology, and marketing values.
Demonstrating innovative and creative use of digital technology and numerical techniques.
Exhibiting entrepreneurial skills.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEO)
  • PEO1:
    UniKL graduates who are knowledgeable, competent and innovative in Industrial Design industry and other creative industries.
  • PEO2:
    UniKL graduates with effective leadership and teamwork skills as well as verbal, non-verbal and interpersonal communication skills to support their role in Industrial Design industries.
  • PEO3:
    UniKL graduates who are committed to the importance of lifelong learning and continuous improvement.
  • PEO4:
    UniKL graduates who practice professionalism with ethics and social responsibility.

    UniKL graduates who are capable of embarking on business and technopreneurial activities.
Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO)
  • PLO1:
    Interpret and apply knowledge and skills including the use of numeracy techniques in relevant areas in Industrial Design effectively for innovative practices.
  • PLO2:
    Critically analyse historical, contextual, conceptual theories, and ethical judgement in Industrial Design practice.
  • PLO3:
    Create and conceive ideation and innovation for the practise areas of Industrial Design.
  • PLO4:
    Articulate and communicate ideas and concepts comprehensively in visual, written, and oral engagements.
  • PLO5:
    Execute design concepts and cost analysis through the use of digital and other technologies for effective delivery.
  • PLO6:
    Construct a portfolio for Industrial Design field, through reflectivity, reviews, and evaluations.
  • PLO7:
    Communicate and interact with experts, peers, clients, superiors, and society under work and organisational related environment for the development of Industrial Design.
  • PLO8:
    Demonstrate leadership and accountability with a commitment to professional and ethical practices including adherence to legal requirements in executing instructions related to the job and organisational functions.
  • PLO9:
    Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning for academic and career development and entrepreneurial mindset in the applications of Industrial Design.

Entry Requirements:

Malaysian Students :
  • A pass in STPM with a minimum of Grade C (GP 2.00) in any two (2) subjects, or its equivalent; strong>OR
  • A pass in STAM with a minimum grade of Jayyid, or its equivalent; OR
  • A Certificate in Matriculation or Foundation with a minimum CGPA of 2.00, or its equivalent;OR
  • A Diploma (Level 4, MQF) with a minimum CGPA of 2.00, or its equivalent; OR
  • A pass in Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM) / Diploma Lanjutan Kemahiran Malaysia (DLKM) / Diploma Vokasional Malaysia (DVM) in suitable fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 subjected to Senate / Academic Board’s approval;
  • A pass in DKM / DLKM / DVM with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and at least two (2) years working experience in a related discipline;
  • Other relevant equivalent qualifications recognised by the Malaysian Government. AND Pass an interview OR submission of portfolio determined by the HEP as required.
International Students :
  • Minimum English language requirements are IELTS 5.0 / CEFR B1 or equivalent TOEFL PBT (410-413) or TOEFL IBT (34) or CAE (160) / CEFR B2 or CPE (180) / CEFR C1 or PTE (36) or MUET (band 3).
