UniKL joins Keluarga Malaysia post-flood clean-up works in Hulu Langat

16 representatives from Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) joined forces with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) in Keluarga Malaysia clean-up operation at Taman Sri Nanding, one of the flood-affected areas in Hulu Langat, Selangor.

The flood-relief works witnessed a combined of more than 140 volunteers from the agencies under the Ministry of Rural Development (KPLB) to help clean up the victims’ houses and amenities there.

Also assisting in the cleaning works were the Minister of Rural Development (KPLB), Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid, Ministry of Rural Development Secretary-General, YBhg. Dato’ Ramlan Harun; Deputy Director-General (Education) of MARA, YBhg. Razlan Haji Samsuri; Deputy Director-General (Management Services) of MARA, Rohayah Mohd Zain; President and Chief Executive Officer of UniKL, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Roziah Omar; UniKL Chief Marketing and Planning Officer (CMPO), Dato’ Amir Azhar Ibrahim and Dean of Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI), Prof. Ts, Dr. Jamel Othman.

As victims have started scrubbing walls and floors of their houses, the mountain of garbage from damaged properties has piled up on the muddied neighbourhood streets. UniKL volunteers tried their best to assist in the laborious work including cleaning windows that were smirched by mud, washing and mopping the floor, and throwing away damaged items.

In addition to the clean-up assistance, Prof. Ts, Dr. Jamel said that UniKL MFI has mobilised five volunteers from the institute to check and fix the electrical wiring of the houses such as switches, sockets, and light fittings. Meanwhile, UniKL Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) volunteers also played their part in succoring the victims by repairing the broken electrical appliances.

“We understand that during this trying time, not to mention the emotional support, the victims are also in need of an extra pair of hands to make the post-flood clean-up job much easier. We are concerned about this situation, and that is why we are here (at the flood-affected areas) to help with the cleaning and repair works,” told him, while adding that the Bangi-based institute will also offer car repair services to the flood victims nearby.

Concurrently, the Prime Minister, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob along with other agencies as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were visiting the areas affected by floods in Taman Sri Nanding and Kampung Dusun Tua, where cleaning works were in progress.

Describing the flood as the worst in years, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri cannot deny that the houses and residents’ belongings were badly damaged brought on by the calamity.

“Our priority is to speed up the work to clean their houses so that they can return home. I also want to express my gratitude to government agencies, NGOs, and members of the security forces involved in post-flood activities throughout the country,” said him.
