UniKL MIMET delivers first Fast Interceptor Craft to THHE Destini

Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) has achieved a significant milestone by completing the construction of its inaugural Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) for THHE Destini Sdn Bhd.

Under the leadership of UniKL MIMET’s national centre of excellence in ship design, the Asia Marine Design Centre (AMDeC), the FIC was formally handed over to the shipbuilding company as part of the Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP) for the Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) on November 21st.

YB Dato’ Sri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali, the newly-appointed Chairman of UniKL, who was present at the handover, emphasised that the achievement underscores AMDeC’s capabilities, showcasing the successful design, construction, and testing of the 11-meter FIC.

“The in-house design of the FIC boat was undertaken by the dedicated staff of AMDeC, comprising lecturers and graduates from UniKL MIMET,” said him in his address at the handover ceremony, held at the THHE Destini office in Pulau Indah, Selangor.

He also expressed confidence in the prospect of numerous collaborative opportunities while highlighting the potential for collective contributions to fortify Malaysia’s maritime and shipping sectors and on the international stage.

THHE Destini, previously awarded a contract by the Malaysian government in January 2017 for constructing, installing, and commissioning three OPVs for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), played a crucial role in the Industrial Collaboration Program (ICP).

In this programme – overseen by the Technology Depository Agency (TDA), THHE Destini acted as the ICP provider, with UniKL as the recipient. Notably, one of the ICP components focused on designing and constructing this FIC for deployment on the OPV.

The construction and sea trials of the FIC took place at UniKL MIMET’s facilities, spanning a total duration of 6 months.

Key attendees at the handover ceremony included the Deputy Secretary of the Procurement Division at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mohd Nazib Che Din; the Director of the Maritime Security and Supervision Division at MMEA, Rear Admiral (M) Datuk Haji Mohd Rosli Abdullah; Acting President/Chief Executive Officer of UniKL, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman Senin; Chief Executive Officer of THHE Destini, Ahmad Yusof Mohamad; and Dean of UniKL MIMET, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Cmdr. (Rtd) Dr. Aminuddin Md. Arof.
