UniKL MSI emerges new champion in history of USSC

Marching ahead with the best performance, Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI) beat out other campuses by emerging as the new overall champion in the 16th UniKL Student Sports Carnival (USSC), yesterday.

Nicknamed MSI El Matador, the Kedah-based campus showcased its mettle by clinching eight gold medals in the annual game, silver (3), and bronze (7), bringing its total to 18 medals.

UniKL MSI seized the title from the 15th USSC Champion, UniKL Business School (UBIS) Beast in 2019, which finished third, while, UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) Bison claimed the first runner-up spot.

Aside from earning its maiden victory, UniKL MSI also pocketed a whopping RM50,000 winning purse to use for sports development.

The six-time winner, UniKL Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (MIAT) Dragons, meanwhile, has been denied twice to reclaim the title and finished in the fifth spot, behind UniKL British Malaysian Institute (BMI) Spartan Beez.

In next year’s USSC organisation, the inaugural champion, UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI) has been selected as the host for the 17th game.

The closing ceremony was graced by the Director General of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), YBhg. Dato’ Azhar Abdul Manaf, with the presence of the Deputy Director General (Education) of MARA, YBhg. Encik Razlan Haji Samsuri; MARA Senior Director of Investment, YBhg. En. Mohd Diah Abas; General Manager, Group Corporate Services of MARA Corporation Sdn. Bhd., Encik Bani Zainal Azmian, President/Chief Executive Officer of UniKL, Datuk Dr. Roziah Omar; Director of UniKL’s Campus Lifestyle Division (CLD), Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Izuddin Fahmy Abu; and the Dean of UniKL MIAT, Dr. Mohd Hafizi Shamsudin.

YBhg. Dato’ Azhar in his closing remarks, commended UniKL for both its academic achievements and sports accomplishments after many of its students won major sports tournaments.

“Organising a big sports tournament involving over 1,000 athletes is no easy task. So a big thumbs up to all the parties involved for all the dedication and hard work they showed throughout this event.

“As well, I am happy and proud that many UniKL athletes have made it big in both local and international sports. These achievements should serve as a motivation and inspiration to all students and athletes at UniKL to reach the same level of success or even greater,” he said.

The 16th USSC was hosted by UniKL Malaysian Institute of Chemical & Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET) and UniKL MIAT, respectively in two phases.

The organisation of USSC has been postponed for two years and finally realised this year with the first phase in August 2022, and the second phase from 15-18 October 2022.
